What: This year Southwood Secondary School staff and students have been invited to participate in the Remembrance Day ceremonies being held at the cenotaph in Galt. Upon discussion with the Royal Canadian Legion and veterans, they have shared with us that one of the that the highlights of the ceremony is the inclusion of young people.  As a result,  Southwood is listening and calling on our school community to participate in this important event. Though in-school services of remembrance are important and play a key educational role, the opportunity for Southwood to show its support by being active participants in the wider community and country is significant.

Who: The Southwood Community

When: Monday Nov. 11th, 2019

  • Extended lunch: 9:50-12 noon
  • Ceremony: 9:50-11:15am (walk down as a school delegation – approx. 2 km)
  • Return to school and lunch: 11:30-noon (walk back as a school delegation – approx. 2 km)

We also respectfully recognize that students/families may seek to acknowledge Remembrance services independently and/or in accordance to their personal beliefs which may not align with this optional opportunity. As always, the school Library and Cafeteria will be available throughout the lunch period to accommodate students. If any barriers to participation present an issue, please contact the Main Office at (519)621-5920.

Where: The Galt Cenotaph

Why: To show our community that Southwood is committed to remembering, respecting and honouring our veterans. Far too often,  students are unfortunately and unfairly perceived as passive in the study of history. This gives students the opportunity to be active participants  in their learning.

How: Students may sign up for the event in the Main Office by the end of the day on Thursday, November 7th or parents/guardians may access School-Day for permission forms.

Reminders:  Be sure to dress for the weather. Please be sure to donate to the Poppy Fund on or before Nov. 11th.  Please remember proper poppy etiquette  (worn on the left side, close to the heart), and that no hats should be worn at the event.
