April 22nd, 2024
Today, April 22, the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) celebrates Earth Day. Every year more than a billion people recognize Earth Day around the world. It is a day of action to change human behaviour and create global, national, and local policy changes.
The environmental stewardship we are challenged to uphold every Earth Day reflects long-held wisdom taught to us by First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples who have always been stewards of the land and water and who have always recognized a deep and reciprocal relationship with the environment.
WRDSB has its First Electric Vehicle (EV)
We are excited to share that Facility Services has added the first electric vehicle (EV) to its fleet. This EV has been assigned as a dedicated service vehicle for Barry Grant, one of WRDSB’s Building Automation Technicians.
This new addition serves as a trial vehicle to see how it will perform as a service vehicle. If this EV proves to be reliable, the WRDSB hopes to expand our EV fleet and purchase more in the future.
Purchasing this vehicle is one step forward in our commitment to sustainability and marks a significant milestone in our efforts towards a greener, cleaner future.
Get Involved
This year we challenge all students and staff to participate in Earth Day and share their actions. This day is a great time to spark further discussion and interest in planet earth and sustainability.
There are many ways you can recognize Earth Day, such as:
- Walk or wheel to and from school
- Waste pick-up around your home or neighbourhood grounds
- Sort recycling
- Conduct a waste audit
- Identify various species of plants and animals around your home or neighbourhood
- iNaturalist App is good for tracking local species
- Calculate your Greenhouse Gas footprint using the Project Neutral calculator
- Learn more from and through Indigenous ways of knowing
- Shut off or unplug unused electric equipment
- Put your personal devices away and enjoy nature
- Participate in an Earth Day Kahoot Quiz to test your eco-awareness
