At Southwood Secondary School February is not just a month on the calendar; it’s a time to celebrate, honor, and reflect on the rich tapestry of Black history. This Black History Month, we are excited to announce a series of engaging grade level assemblies that delve into the evolution of civil rights and spotlight important historical Black figures, particularly in the Canadian context.
In our classrooms, students are invited to explore the question, “Why does Black history matter?” as they explore the narratives of resilience, achievement, and significant contributions by Black individuals. Our commitment to recognizing Black History Month extends beyond the curriculum, as these assemblies serve as a platform to amplify these stories and foster a deeper understanding of the diverse voices that shape our shared history.
Southwood Secondary School is dedicated to creating an inclusive and empowering learning environment, where staff and students can appreciate the importance of Black history and its impact on the world. Through this celebration, we aim to inspire thoughtful conversations, promote cultural awareness, and recognize the significance of embracing the full spectrum of our collective heritage. Together, let’s honor the past, celebrate the present, and shape a more inclusive future.
Happy Black History Month!
