March 31st, 2021
Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) is launching its first-ever Student Census. This is an opportunity for us to learn more about the students we support and help us to identify differences and gaps in our students’ experiences and outcomes based on their diverse needs.
The WRDSB Student Census is a confidential and voluntary survey for all parents/guardians of students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 and for all students in Grades 4 to 12.
The census will be launched on April 19, 2021.
Why are we launching a Student Census?
The goal of the Student Census is to better understand the diversity within the WRDSB. The census will allow us to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural, social and demographic makeup of our students.
This work is mandated for all school boards in Ontario under the Provincial Anti-Racism Act. Our process has been developed in accordance with the guidance and legislation provided by the Ministry of Education, the Anti-Racism Directorate, the Ontario Human Rights Commission, and the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The role of the WRDSB is to support the census process for students and families and to make the best use of the information that is gathered.
You can read more about the census by reading our Parent/Guardian Information Letter. This letter is available in many languages by using the drop down menu in the top right corner of the page.
What questions will be in the Student Census?
The census will include questions about students’ cultural, social, and sociodemographic identity. It specifically asks about Indigenous status, ethnic/cultural background, racial identity, first language, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, health/disability status, socioeconomic circumstances, age, and grade.
Copies of the student census can be found on our website.
Does my child have to participate?
Every question on the Student Census is optional. Every student and parent/guardian can choose which (if any) questions they wish to answer. Parents/guardians of children under 18 years of age can request that their child not participate in Student Census by completing this Opt Out Form. This form needs to be completed by Friday, April 9, 2021.
How will my child participate in the Student Census?
Families with children in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 will participate in the census on behalf of the student. Families will receive an email with instructions and a link to participate in the Student Census.
Students in Grade 4 to 12 will participate in the census in designated class time facilitated by their teacher.
