Next week we are running a virtual mental health week!

Monday April 4 – #GetLoud about Mental Health

Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which the way we think, handle stress, get things done, have fun, and believe in our own ability to build a happy, healthy life are all important components. Talking about mental health alone can be difficult for many of us but more and more people are recognizing that mental health and wellbeing is an important part of our overall health. The World Health Organization states that “there is no health without mental health.”

One in five Canadians experiences a mental health illness or mental health issue every year. Self-Care is important so be good to yourself.  Join our challenge and #GetLoud about Mental Health.  Share with family, friends, or co-workers, what you do to stay mentally healthy. For some, it’s as simple as reading a book, eating healthy foods, being kind and laughing all of which can help improve your mental health.  Here is a great youth-centered resource containing information for students, but also parents & families as well as for educators. This one comes from School Mental Health Ontario. Check it out here:

Tuesday April 5 – Random Acts of Kindness

We need to distance ourselves, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help each other.  During difficult times, we often see the most beautiful acts of kindness.  We will get through this sooner if we take care of ourselves and others.  Kindness is a powerful tool! Join our challenge and reach out to family, friends, neighbours and coworkers about how we’re all really doing.  Phone calls, video calls, and other digital technologies offer excellent opportunities for connecting face-to-face.

Some ways to show kindness during covid–19:

  • Call a friend that you haven’t spoken to for a while
  • Tell a family member how much you love and appreciate them
  • Make a cup of tea for someone you live with
  • Arrange to watch a film at the same time as a friend and video call
  • Tell someone you are proud of them
  • Send a motivational text to a friend who is struggling
  • Reach out to call a friend, family member or neighbor who is experiencing loneliness or isolation

Thursday April 7 – Who Are Your Social Supports?

Even before there was COVID-19, loneliness and social isolation were already of major concern in our society.  People with weak or few social connections are at increased risk for anxiety, depression, anti-social behaviour and suicidal behaviours. Research shows that loneliness is more keenly felt by people who belong to a visible minority, who are Indigenous, who have mobility challenges and who are LGBTQ identifying. Research shows that social support provides important benefits to our physical and mental health. Stress may be related to a number of health concerns, from mental health problems to chronic health problems like heart disease and migraines. However, social support can help protect people from the harmful effects of stress. Many of the people in your life can provide social support. These can include your parents, friends, partner, siblings, other family members, co-workers, neighbours, health professionals, guidance counselor, teacher, support groups, and sometimes even strangers. Are there people in your life you can turn to when you need to talk to someone? Join our challenge and post a selfie or photo with that person or persons who are an important part of your social support network and thank them for all that they do! Don’t forget to tag us on social media @ssswrdsb

Friday April 8 – Wear Green Friday!

The green ribbon is the international symbol for mental health awareness. Wear green in support of Mental Health Awareness and reducing the stigma. So on Friday, April 8, we challenge you to join us and wear green! Encourage your colleagues, friends and family to take part and make sure mental health gets in the limelight.
