Dear Southwood families,

In recent days, we have had students approach us about conversations they are having on social media regarding a student walkout planned for April 4th. Across the province, students are talking about walking out to demonstrate their feelings about the recent changes announced regarding our public education system and their upcoming high school experience.

As educators, we encourage children to use their voices in a positive and respectful way to create change. Student leadership and positive citizenship are a central part of our daily classroom discussions.

We also must consider issues of safety and security for students. These protests are expected to happen at the elementary and secondary level, with differing rules and expectations around student behaviour (e.g. leaving the property at a break etc.) It is important to all of us that students who wish to speak up in this way are kept safe and secure.

We will be making our expectations clear, should students decide to peacefully protest on that day. We would ask that, as a family, you discuss them with your child(ren) as well. They are as follows:

  • Students must remain on school grounds at all times. Regular sign-out permission processes will remain in place.
  • Protests must be peaceful and respectful (e.g., no signs that would violate school code of conduct etc.)
  • Students must act in a respectful and non-violent way to each other, and to anyone passing on the street etc.
  • Students choosing to participate should become informed on WHY they are protesting before they decide to participate. This is not simply an opportunity to go outside and miss class – they should be able to articulate what they stand for.
  • Students choosing not to participate must be allowed to do so, without pressure.

We will also ask that they inform the office of the timing of any plans, so that we can ensure teachers are aware, and that we provide adequate supervision in the area of the yard where they are congregating.

We applaud our students who are already thinking about being active citizens and about how to make their voices heard. This is a true demonstration of maturity and leadership.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at the school to discuss at 519-621-5920.

Thank you

Vida Collis

Principal
