Forum for Young Canadians is program that brings students from all parts of Canada to Ottawa to discover how government works. This years, Katrina Borrias-Spitzig of Southwood Secondary School, will be one of 300 students who have been selected to participate in Forum 2017, and one of only two students representing the Waterloo Region District School Board. Students selected for the Forum Program, take part in a number of activities in the Nation’s Capital, including sitting in on a session of the House of Commons and Senate, talking to parliamentarians and senior public officials, and much more. They will also participate in a mock parliament discussion on the topic of immigration and take part in a national general election simulation.
In addition to enhanced leadership skills, students will take home unparalleled insights into the working of the Canadian government, an understanding of the diverse viewpoints of fellow Canadians, a broader understanding of the roles and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship and incredible friendships that can last a lifetime.
Students rely on the support of community organizations to assist in paying their fees which cover tuition, meals and their room. The transportation fee can be paid by Exchanges Canada, through the Department of Canadian Heritage.
