For today’s challenge, read Canada’s Food Guide’s “Healthy Eating Habits” and let us know how you are making healthy eating habits. You could take a picture of your lunch, write out an eating schedule, help cook a family meal or create a foodie meme. Here are some tips from Ms. Roth:
- eat at 3 regular times everyday…a morning meal, a mid-day meal and an evening meal
- wash your hands before eating
- eat at a table near a window…if possible
- set the table with everything you will need before sitting down
- have a beginning to your meal and an end to the meal (leave the table or eating area)
- clean up after the meal…put food away, do dishes, shake placemat outside, sweep/vacuum floor
- have a glass of water with your meal
- do not have cell phone at table or in your pocket when eating
- if possible, eat with someone else…and talk to them
- do not talk about the virus or why you are home…find other topics…or…at least talk about the weather
- try to eat ‘real’ food (food has nutrients in it)
- try to really, really limit edible products aka junk food
- wash your hands again at the end of the meal…this helps your brain to know that this ‘activity of eating’ is now ended
If you don’t have enough food at home, please let a teacher or guidance counsellor know. The community has some resources in place to help you like Pop Up Snacks by Nutrition for Learning.
